However, developmental outcomes are not determined by genetics alone. Research on puppy socialisation consistently indicates that early exposure to appropriate social and environmental stimuli plays a significant role in later behaviour, including fearfulness, aggression, confidence, and social competence. This raises an important welfare concern: if puppies are selected for appearance and manageability but are not given sufficient early-life exposure to their mother, littermates, stable adult dogs, humans, and varied environments, they may enter homes physically healthy but behaviourally underprepared.
